Home Personalization Process: Exterior Design Selections

After finding a new-construction community that feels like home and selecting the best floor plan for your family, you’ll work with a Bill Clark Homes professional design consultant to personalize your space. After the initial design meeting—where buyers bring in ideas, pictures, swatches, and visions to help the designer understand what you're looking for and find elements to complement your style—you'll work on exterior selections. We asked our design team to answer a few questions about this step of the personalization process, and we hope their responses will help you prepare for your journey toward a completed home.

What components of the exterior do you help homeowners select?

Homeowners get to personalize every exterior detail of their home, from the brick that frames their porches to the style of shingles on their roof. Some components have only a few options to choose from, while others (like paint colors) have over 40 options.

How do you balance the client’s style with the existing aesthetic in the community?

Bill Clark Homes has established standard finish levels in each community we build. This allows us to dictate each neighborhood's overall feel and style while still giving homeowners the ability to customize their homes to their unique taste and liking within these set standards. Whether you choose a community in Greenville, Wilmington or New Bern, it will have that familiar coastal style with the attention to detail you've come to expect from our brand.

What are some big exterior design trends you’re seeing with homeowners currently?

Our buyers are drawn to a Coastal Farmhouse vibe right now. We're seeing many people mix white board-and-batten exteriors with black roofs, windows, and accents. This look is often finished off with a stained door or a fun, muted blue. While there's nothing more classic and timeless than a white house, the black accents freshen the look.

What is the most enjoyable part of the process for designers? What about clients?

Our favorite part of the exterior selection process, as designers, is choosing the front door. Next to lighting and interior paint, the color and style of a homeowner's front door tell a lot about who lives in the house. On the other hand, clients tend to love designing exterior living spaces like screened-in patios and covered porches. Living in a coastal region allows our homeowners to enjoy their outdoor living spaces year-round, leading them to put much love and thought into their design choices surrounding these spaces.

How does Bill Clark Homes make the personalization process simple for homeowners?

The team of designers walks homeowners through each area of the home, step by step, to ensure their ideas are communicated, and their vision is brought to life. We understand that some buyers may be overwhelmed by the number of decisions that go into building a home—which is why we make it as simple as possible. Whether they need additional visits to the design center to get a better feel of the finishes available or need to browse our extensive online gallery that showcases every floor plan with various options throughout, we hope to put their mind at ease and create the perfect finished product.

What comes next?

Although only the beginning of the personalization process, the exterior selections set the tone for the rest of your home. Our design coordinators will help you create a unique look that complements the community while capturing your taste.
