Nearly Five Decades of Building Homes in Greenville and Wilmington

In 1977, Bill Clark founded the company that bears his name and since that time, Bill Clark Homes (BCH) has grown to rank consistently as a top 100 builder in the United States. More than 15,000 homes in Greenville, Wilmington, Raleigh, Fayetteville, and Myrtle Beach were built over the decades. Today, Bill’s sons, Lance and Heath, serve as co-CEOs and building is focused on the Wilmington and Greenville markets.

“When I started the company, it began with one house built for a family to call home,” Bill says. “I am fortunate that I’ve been able to pass along my passion for building new homes to my children. My sons grew up on construction sites and learned the building and development business hands-on. It has been fun to watch as they have taken the reins of Bill Clark Homes. We’ve expanded from my original goal of simply building quality homes into the industry-leading homebuilder we are today.”

Lance and Health have continued their father’s tradition of building homes for families. “It is an honor and a proud moment when we have families buy their second and sometimes even their third home from Bill Clark Homes,” Lance says.

Heath is located at the BCH Wilmington office. He grew up playing baseball and working on construction sites. After earning his marketing degree from East Carolina University, he knew that working as part of the family business would be his future. When an opportunity to build for the Wilmington division of BCH came up, Heath moved to the coast and never looked back.

Lance runs the Greenville BCH office. Lance joined BCH in 1990, and after earning his accounting degree from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, he returned to Greenville and became area manager in 2005. He is active in the Greenville community serving on the Greenville ENC Alliance, the Pitt County Home Builders Association, and the Greenville Chamber of Commerce.

Best known for their coastal home styles, Bill Clark Homes focuses on maximizing spaces to accommodate any lifestyle and they offer the ability to personalize each home. “We understand the process of turning a dream home into reality and strive to help each client do so.” The company’s custom brand was established in 2015 as Legacy Homes by Bill Clark.

BCH is committed to providing affordable housing in the Greenville area. “Affordable housing is extremely difficult with the rising costs over the years,” Lance says. “We have partnered with the city of Greenville on numerous occasions to provide high quality affordable homes and will continue to do so.” One ongoing affordable housing project is in Greenville’s Lincoln Park neighborhood. The Greenville City Council unanimously approved a contract with BCH to construct six homes in Lincoln Park, completing an effort to provide new, affordable housing for the neighborhood that started with the construction of four homes in 2020. The homes are available for buyers at or below 80 percent of the area median income and the city is offering down payment assistance.

Bill Clark Homes has a well-earned reputation for giving back to the community. They are big supporters of East Carolina University and in 2024 made the largest gift in the history of ECU Athletics and the Pirate Club. The gift closes out funding for the Isley Indoor Performance Center and spearheads a final push to fully fund the Dick and Sarah Bennett Baseball Building expansion project. Over the years, BCH has also contributed to the Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium renovation and the Pirates Unite Campaign. They also made a significant gift to help ECU sports during the Covid pandemic.

“At the core of our business, we are a family dedicated to helping other families,” Heath says. “This includes building safe, beautiful, and affordable homes, but also inspires year-round contributions to local organizations that help our neighbors who need it most.” Some organizations that BCH supports are Wounded Warriors, Maynard Children’s Hospital, Habitat for Humanity, Children’s Miracle Network, American Heart Association, and St. Jude Children's Hospital, as well as many first responders in Greenville and Wilmington.

BCH has about 100 employees and Lance says, “One of the most important pieces of the Bill Clark Homes success story is our employees.  We have employees who have worked with our company for over 25 years and many who have retired after a long career with us.  Several employees have children who have grown up and now work for BCH. In fact, we have one family that currently has three generations working with us! That is an honor. Our employees are considered extended family, and we hope to be able to provide for them for many years to come.”

Bill Clark Homes moved their relationship to TowneBank and work with Wes Barnes(Opens in a new window), senior vice president and commercial banker. “We have known Wes and Greg Steele, Greenville president, for a few years,” Lance says. “Their commitment to the community was a deciding factor for us to switch banks.”

“Having the opportunity to work with the Clark family is truly an honor,” Wes says. “Our community knows that the Clarks are more than a family that builds residential homes and communities in our area.  While their building company is outstanding, their desire to give back to Greenville and our surrounding areas is truly what separates them from the pack.  They set the gold standard for what a building company should be, and what a true patron of Eastern North Carolina looks like. Towne is grateful to have the Clark family and Bill Clark Homes as members of our Towne family.”
